Workshops and Training Opportunities

1.Anchorage: January 6 & 7-SEAPerch Workshop- For Middle School / High School Teachers. Learn about fundamental concepts in science, engineering, and math like force and motion, buoyancy, design, and electricity while constructing a remotely operated underwater vehicle, all in an atmosphere of discovery, inquiry, and fun. All workshop materials are provided including an ROV Build Kit, Teacher and Student manuals, and black-line masters. 8am – 3:30pm each day. 2. Anchorage: January 7-The Alaska Zoo Edzoocation Teacher Workshop from 9am to Noon. Teachers and paraprofessionals will have the opportunity to learn about the education programs the zoo has to offer, interact with zoo staff and animals and sign up for education programs. Space is limited. Attendance is FREE and coffee and tea will be provided. Please note this event is for teachers and paraprofessionals only. Hear the latest in the fields of climate, oceanography, lower trophic levels, the benthos, fishes and invertebrates, seabirds, marine mammals, local and traditional knowledge, and socioeconomic research.

4. Anchorage: January 19- 12-week Nature and Travel Writing Class will begin on January 19 in the Sierra Club office downtown. Participants in this workshop-style class will explore and refine their own writing styles, with an emphasis on the personal essay form. The class will also read and discuss works by

Homer: Registration Deadline: February 6- , Environmental Education Methods- Discover effective education strategies used by conservation professionals to target specific resource management issues to the correct audiences. This course helps participants incorporate evaluation strategies into program planning and implementation. Participants also learn how to work with students, teachers, youth groups and their leaders, both on public land and private lands. You will begin developing a project for your site during the course, then implement and complete it as a required post-course assignment. April 17-20, 2011. 7. All About Mining : Total Concept of the Mining Industry Summer Course- The course at the Colorado School of Mines is designed to provide K-12 teachers of all disciplines, administrators,

counselors, and librarians with an overview of all phases of the minerals, aggregates, industrial minerals, and solid fuels industries. Ten half-days of classroom instruction are supported with a one-day geology trip plus eight full days of field trips to operating mines and associated plants. Some financial assistance is available for non-Colorado applicants who apply before April 1. Six hours of licensure/recertification credit are awarded upon completion of the course. 13. Earth Science ‘Big Ideas’ Now on TeacherTube- features free AGI videos to help students, educators, and others explore the “big ideas” of Earth science. 16. Entry Deadline: January 6, 2012- Make it Short- 40 second film contest- The Northwest Film Center celebrates its 40 years in the making and with that brings about MAKE IT SHORT: A 40-Second Film Contest. Entries will be screened on January 17th. In addition to an audience choice award, prizes include cash, production services and the grand prize winner will see their work screened at the Portland International Film Festival in February. There will be two categories of competition: Youth for ages 18 and younger and General for ages 19 and older. There is no entry fee. 19. The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium Community Environmental Demonstration Project Grants provides one year Community Environmental Demonstration Project Grants ranging from $5,000 to $30,000 to local environmental projects that improve health and the environment throughout rural Alaska communities. Funding is made possible through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Alaska Tribal Multi-media Program.
