Workshops and Training Oportuntiies
1. Anchorage: June 24-28- 2012 National Marine Educators Association Conference. Conference strands will focus on science and art, science and culture, science and technology, and Large Marine Ecosystem science and education, with a special emphasis on integrating traditional knowledge and western marine and aquatic science education. Air Quality Workshop for Teachers: A Toolkit for Facilitators- The goal of the downloadable materials is for K-12 teachers to gain a better understanding of air quality and air pollution issues, and gain insight into topics such as global warming and climate change, calculating a carbon footprint, and the health effects of air pollution.

GPS Lesson- I Know Where You Are! for students in grades 9-12 introduces the basic principles of a Global Positioning System (GPS) and provides practice opportunities in locating specific features on a topographic map. 8. Rare Diseases and Scientific Inquiry- Middle school students will gain a scientific perspective on rare diseases by exploring these and other questions that bring science to life. 9. Power Up! Engineering Game- This online action-strategy game for students in grades 9–12 introduces engineering principles and highlights diversity in the field. In the game, students must save the imaginary planet Helios from ecological devastation by acting as engineers and carrying out missions to supply solar, wind, and water power to the planet. 11. Help Celebrate the 25th Year of Project FeederWatch! Project FeederWatch is an enjoyable and rewarding way to learn more about your favorite feeder birds while contributing to scientific research. The season begins November 12. Participants will receive a research kit, including ID poster, bird calendar, and complete instructions. 12. USA Biology Olympiad- The USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) is the premiere US biology competition for high school students. After two rounds of challenging exams, 20 students are invited to a residential training program at Purdue University where they experience labs and lectures with advanced biological concepts and exacting lab skills. The top four students go on to represent the USA at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in Singapore July 8 to 15, 2012. Reg Davidson will give a slideshow presentation on the contemporary history of Haida art and culture. Reg Davidson is an internationally acclaimed Haida artist who creates sculptures, silkscreen prints, gold and silver jewelry, weaving, carved masks, painted drums, and regalia. Anchorage: November 16- Mining and Minerals in Alaska- will be presented at 7pm at the Campbell Creek Science Center, BLM resource specialists will talk about the importance of minerals in our everyday lives, describe Alaska’s rapidly growing mining industry, discuss the challenges mining operations present for federal land managers, and review the processes BLM uses to authorize mining operations and oversee mining compliance on federal lands in Alaska.
